Hedgerow Heroes (West Sussex)
Available from 1 November 2025 to 21 March 2026
Our Hedgerow Heroes project centres around the planting and restoration of a large area of hedge at the Manhood Peninsula (6 miles south of Chichester).
The target is to plant 2 kilometres of native hedge. This equals approximately 10,000 trees and will make a huge difference locally.
The planting will take place in Ham, Sidlesham, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from the start of November through to mid-March, depending on the wetness of the soil. We are going to need LOTS of help to get these trees in the ground but this an incredibly rewarding activity that makes a huge difference. Not everyone has to dig holes, we have lighter jobs putting in the trees, stakes and guards.
Hedges are vital wildlife corridors for many species of birds, insects, butterflies and small mammals. They provide a safe route for travel as well as food and shelter. In this area they help to link up the protected and special areas of Pagham Harbour, Medmerry and Chichester Harbour.
Hedges are our best friends as they hold soil on the land so that it doesn't end up in the water courses, reducing water quality, and silting them up, contributing to local flooding issues. They also soak up carbon, add to the visual appeal of the landscape, and slow down the winds. We need to put them back, gap fill older hedges, and repair damage from previous long ago government policies around hedgerow removal.
This is part of a national campaign, launched in 2021, to extend the UK hedgerows network by 40% by 2050.
Through volunteering with us you will be helping to look after our fantastic countryside and ensuring the success of this vital project for CPRE Sussex.
We provide out-of-pocket travel expenses should this be required.
There is more detail in the role description of the range of tasks you might get involved with. There is flexibility as to what you'll be doing, and this will be discussed with you when you apply. If you have any questions, click 'the Ask a question' box on the right hand side of this advert.
